UA&P I AM S.T.R.O.N.G. : The Shorter The Better?

By: Joie Soberano

According to popular belief, “we are what we wear.” If that’s the case, how then would you perceive these celebrities?

Do you think they look attractive and sexy? Or do you think they are revealing too much?

There are obviously two sides of the coin. Some people may admire these girls for their being able to wear fashionable skimpy clothing, but some would consider them people who are not worthy of respect because of how they present themselves to the public.

The truth is fashion will never be just fashion. Your own fashion statement-- how you dress up every single day will reflect your personality and will dictate how people treat you.

However, fashion trends today are disregarding this fact.

The shorter, the better; if you show more skin, the more fashionable you are.

Hollywood celebrities set this standard, and a lot of people seem to be following this trend.

What do you think of our fashion now? Does a person have to wear skimpy clothing to be in fashion?

no i disagree that the shorter the better. it says a lot about the person, and i agree that it's not simply a fashion statement.

For me,,a big NO!! Being "in fashion" doesn't entail skimpy clothing...It's just the trend that's making the skimpy clothes cool nowadays, however that's not the whole of fashion...It's just a trend! A trend that may be gone in a few years...

I think that fashion really isn't just one's style; but rather, it is a statement of oneself. The saying "You are what you are wearing" indeed holds true. That's why it should be clear to a person that what s/he's wearing does reflect him/her. If one wants to be respected, then that person has to show others his/her respect for oneself too.

The shorter the better? Well, it also depends on how that person carries herself (seeing the issue to be more important to females). Sometimes, the reasons behind wearing a particular clothing also matters. We shouldn't just be stereotyping everyone who wears shorter clothing. We don't have the prerogative to generalize.

No way! Which is why i really admire girls who are able to dress up fashionably without showing too much skin

The Shorter...not really the better. it still depends on the one wearing the dress or top, on the occasion, etc. it also does not necessarily need to show alot of skin. sometimes, the shorter may be the better, but one could wear something like leggings or skinny jeans to cover up. being in fashion is being creative and distinctive, not being slutty-looking or the like.the best way to be trendy is not to absolutely follow the trend!

i also disagree because if its shorter it does not make u a better person. u may feel better about yourslf but in the end it leads to still feeling empty.i does not matter also how short it is because even pants can become a fashion statement as long as the person can carry it

I disagree! Shorter being better is definitely a wrong notion. Like others have already mentioned, there are other ways of being fashionable (i.e. leggings, skinny jeans, etc...)

Hello guys! Thank you for your comments. Yes, I do agree with all of you. There are definitely other ways of being in fashion, which doesn't require us to wear overly revealing clothing.

If you want to be respected by people, you have to dress up accordingly. A person's manner of dressing is a reflection of his/her personality :)

In today's generation, the so called "butchress selling of one's body" has been a popular demand specially among teenagers. But is it appealing to look at?will a person appreciate somebody who is wearing skimpy/ short clothing? Will that person wearing short and skimpy clothing gain respect, appreciation, and recognition?
I tell you now, that person will not gain any of those aforementioned remarks. You know why? Its really disgusting to look at and it seems that this world doesnt produce much of a textile used in making clothing because in reality, there is so much of these that are being produced. Then why force ourselves to wear these short clothes while in fact there is an abundance of the supply of textile?because of fashion?that's a lame and stupid reason to begin with.

You can always be in fashion just by being yourself, where you are comfortable at, and lastly, by being confident of yourself and that is already fashion.

I must admit that i am such an avid reader of fashion magazines but allow me to tell you this, i admire styles of this present generation but that didnt influence me a lot when it comes to dressing up because YOU HAVE TO SET a certain principle in yourself. Because if you do not have a principle, then i tell you..YOU are WEAK, and do not have your own style. Dont be such an imitator of what fashion demands you to do. Be YOUR OWN FASHION.
Be smart, be creative, and be classy...and you dont need to wear short and skimpy clothes to achieve what i just said earlier.

"The shorter the better" should be an eye opener to everyone regardless of the age of any individual reading this article by Joie Soberano because you have to reflect that if you do not want to be judge as B****, S***...then be simple, classy, and elegant and in that way, I assure you 100% that the people around you will definitely respect and appreciate you. Isnt great to feel this way and this kind of approach that people has on you?

SO what are you waiting for, people who are currently victimized by this short and skimpy clothing should now change...Change for the BETTER.

IF shorter is better, then how come girls who dress up in mini skirts desperately try to pull it down everytime they sit down to force it to cover parts of their body that it could not? Or how come girls who wear tops that show too much of their cleavage feel scandalized when men stare at them? I believe women and girls follow trends and fashions without giving it any second thought, or rather without thinking about it at all, because for them, staying "in", being accepted by their peers, and not being baduy is what is more important even if they sub consciously try to maintain the dignity their clothes do not protect.

I have nothing against people who wear skimpy clothing, that is their choice and their option. But for the people who wear it and desperately try to make it cover places it was not designed to cover, then don't wear those things in the first place.

I like this topic, thanks! Our manner of dressing always says something whether we like it or not. Hence, we should all be cautious and prevent people from judging us by not wearing overly revealing clothes.

Hi people, i agree with all your comments!!!

With this age, a lot of people want to wear skimpy clothes or short clothes. They just follow the trends designers dictate. So why do we always have to follow them if we know that it may harm us in the future?

As one said, "BE YOUR OWN FASHION". In this generation, we can dictate the fashions we want. And i'm just hoping that the fashion we will choose is something that will make people feel true respect to one's self and to others.

If we want to be respected, we have to set principles to ourselves. Like in one of the comments, it was stated that you are weak if you actually don't have principles in life. if we have this, we won't be easily be swayed by fashion.

Fashion will come and go, and what makes important to people is your dignity as a person!

A person doesn't have to wear skimpy clothes i.e. bear a lot of skin in order to be considered fashionable. Actually, it works the other way around, some celebrities like Beyonce or Paris, for example, wear really short skirts but don't look malaswa (with some exceptions). Nasa pagdadala lang yan.

Again, we should be likewise careful to judge a person as being "malaswa" for wearing something skimpy. Baka naman tlgang nainitan ang person that's why naka-spag strap & short shorts..hehe. yung iba nmn, talagang may knack for fashion kaya normal nlng for them ang sumuot ng ganun, walang malay na its considered skimpy for others na pla.

Lastly, in our culture narin kc how we perceive this or that clothing to be skimpy...in the US bale wala lng ang ganitong fashion, but in the Phils its a big deal.

exactly because if we can wear things that are not that revealing and carry it, you have your fashion statement

Never. You dont need to wear skimpy clothes just to let people know your a ''fashionista'' or whatever. Stick to your principles and be who you are. Nice work, Joie!

You don't have to show lots of skin to look good!
