UA&P I AM S.T.R.O.N.G. : Studying in High School

by: Jewelz Lim

I studied high school in California and in Cebu, during those times I never realized the importance of studying. I always turned in my assignments but I just made them to pass the class. I spent a lot of my time with my friends, going to the mall. It was only when I got to college that I realized how important studying was. In class, I felt like I was the only student who didn't know the answers... But that was only because I didn't read the assignment. After a couple of weeks in college, I got my act together and I started studying. It was then I realized that I should be doing it for myself. I was happy because I not only learned many new things. I also gained more knowledge about everything around me. I made it a habit to always complete my assignments so that I can be a better person.

Sometimes I wonder how other people study.. If its during the day, or night. If they can study better with others, or if they study in the library.

For me, I enjoy studying at home because I like it quiet and I can concentrate on what I am reading. I also have a hard time studying with others because I tend to talk to them and make kwento. I also take breaks every 1 hour or so. This lets me gain energy to continue studying again.

What other studying habits do other people have?

I usually take down notes and listen to slow music when i study. It really works for me!

Anonymous said...

yes, that's a good study habit, schoolgirl.. :) because by taking down notes while studying will make you remember your notes more. slow music will lessen your sleepiness while studying. :)

i do that too, but sometimes with loud or fast music. slow music is better, though. :)

To schoolgirl, I agree with sara, try listening to Beethoven or to Chopin! Studies show that they stimulate students' mind to focus more when they are studying.

eep...high school, a past I would not rather bring up. Was a very lazy student then and would fail subjects right and left :(
But,on the subjects that I DID exert effort in, i would listen to the music appropriate for the subject. CHinese music for chinese subjects, and english music for engligh, filipino for filipino. I also do outlining and repetitive writing so I for memory work.

Jewelz Lim's reply:
I think highschool was a big part of my life.. We all learn differently and I think you just have to find your own way of doing things. I really think that's a great idea. Chinese music for chinese subjects, I think it would help when trying to remember things. That's a new idea for me, I think I could try that out, thanks! :)

I found one day in school a boy of medium size ill-treating a smaller boy. I expostulated, but he replied: 'The bigs hit me, so I hit the babies; that's fair.' In these words he epitomized the history of the human race.

The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think - rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men.

Anonymous said...

If we value independence, if we are disturbed by the growing conformity of knowledge, of values, of attitudes, which our present system induces, then we may wish to set up conditions of learning which make for uniqueness, for self-direction, and for self-initiated learning.

Anonymous said...

The aim of education is the knowledge not of fact, but of values.

Anonymous said...

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Anonymous said...

It has always seemed strange to me that in our endless discussions about education so little stress is laid on the pleasure of becoming an educated person, the enormous interest it adds to life. To be able to be caught up into the world of thought -- that is to be educated.

Anonymous said...

Have you ever been at sea in a dense fog, when it seemed as if a tangible white darkness shut you in and the great ship, tense and anxious, groped her way toward the shore with plummet and sounding-line, and you waited with beating heart for something to happen? I was like that ship before my education began, only I was without compass or sounding line, and no way of knowing how near the harbor was. "Light! Give me light!" was the wordless cry of my soul, and the light of love shone on me in that very hour.

WHEN a number of school students were asked, ‘What do you worry about most?’ 51 percent said, “Grades”!

Anonymous said...

Little wonder that school grades are a major source of anxiety among youths

Anonymous said...

Grades can mean the difference between graduating and being left behind, between obtaining a well-paying job and getting only a minimum wage, between receiving the praise of parents and incurring their wrath.

Anonymous said...

“Test results can reveal areas of strength and weakness of individual students and act as motivating devices for future study.” Your grades also serve to give your parents some idea of how you are doing in school—for better or for worse.

Anonymous said...

Too much concern about grades, however, can create paralyzing stresses and ignite fierce competition.

Anonymous said...

One textbook on adolescence observes that college-bound students can especially be “caught up in a competitive maze that emphasizes grades and class rank rather than learning.” As a result, to quote Dr. William Glasser, students “learn early in school to ask what is going to be on the test and . . . study only that material.”

Anonymous said...

education means more than racking up points on tests. It means developing what King Solomon called “thinking ability,” the skill of taking raw information and drawing sound, practical conclusions from it. (Proverbs 1:4)

Anonymous said...

I like cramming in exams, it's exciting

Anonymous said...

A youth who manages to get passing grades through guessing, cramming, or even cheating never really learns how to think. And what good is a high grade in math if later on you find yourself unable to balance a checkbook?

Anonymous said...

It is important that you view grades, not as an end in themselves, but as a helpful means of gauging your progress at school.

Anonymous said...

poor students tend to “blame their poor [school] performances on sources beyond their control: unfair test questions, a prejudiced teacher, bad luck, fate, the weather.”

Anonymous said...

“The lazy one is showing himself desirous, but his soul has nothing.” (Proverbs 13:4)

Anonymous said...

Yes, laziness is often the real reason for low grades.

Anonymous said...

Good students, however, take responsibility for their learning.

Anonymous said...

Personal motivation helps you keep going

Anonymous said...

Putting yourself on a schedule and organizing your time

Anonymous said...

You have to set goals for yourself

Anonymous said...

Yes, how good your grades are depends for the most part, not on factors beyond your control, but on YOU—how hard you are willing to study and apply yourself in school.

Anonymous said...

some youths sincerely feel they are already working themselves to the bone but getting no results

Anonymous said...

researchers at Stanford University (U.S.A.) polled some 770 students and asked how much effort they felt they were putting into their schoolwork.

Anonymous said...

Oddly enough, students with low grades thought they worked as hard as anybody! Yet when their study habits were examined, it was discovered that they actually did far less homework than their high-achieving schoolmates.

Anonymous said...

The lesson? Perhaps you too are not studying as hard as you think you are, and some changes would be in order

Anonymous said...

. An article in the Journal of Educational Psychology showed that simply making “an increase in time spent on homework has a positive effect on a student’s grades in high school.”

Anonymous said...

In fact, “with 1 to 3 hours of homework a week, the average low ability student can achieve grades commensurate with an average ability student who does not do homework.”

Anonymous said...

You may similarly have to institute a get-tough policy with yourself, especially if TV or other distractions easily divert your attention from studying. You might even try putting a sign on the TV that says, “No TV until homework is done!”

Anonymous said...

Most of us would benefit from having a quiet place that is set aside for study

Anonymous said...

. If you share a room or if space is limited in your home, improvise! Perhaps the kitchen or someone’s bedroom can be proclaimed your study area for an hour or so each evening.

Anonymous said...

Or as a last resort, try a public library or a friend’s home

Anonymous said...

If possible, use a desk or a table with plenty of space on which to spread out your work.

Anonymous said...

Keep supplies such as pencils and paper handy so you won’t have to get up constantly.

Anonymous said...

Make sure, that you have adequate, glare-free lighting.

Anonymous said...

Good lighting reduces study fatigue and protects your eyes as well.

Anonymous said...

check ventilation and room temperature

Anonymous said...

A cool room provides a more invigorating study environment than a warm room does.

Anonymous said...

What if you are simply not in the mood for studying?

Anonymous said...

view homework as an exercise in self-discipline, a rehearsal for later work experience.

Anonymous said...

If possible, studying should be done in the same place and at the same time every day. Thus, regular study will become a habit, and will reduce your resistance to study

Anonymous said...

Be businesslike about it

Anonymous said...

At a secular job, you will have to work every day—whether you are in the mood for it or not

Anonymous said...

At Philippians 3:16, Paul encouraged Christians to “go on walking orderly in this same routine.”

Anonymous said...

Try, for instance, to organize what you are going to study

Anonymous said...

Avoid studying similar subjects (such as two foreign languages) in sequence

Anonymous said...

Plan brief breaks between subjects, especially if your homework load is heavy.

Anonymous said...

First, SURVEY your material.

Anonymous said...

Glance through the assigned material, looking at subheadings, charts, and so forth, in order to get an overall view of it.

Anonymous said...

Next, make up QUESTIONS based on chapter titles or topic sentences. (This keeps your mind focused on what you read.)

Anonymous said...

Now READ, looking for the answers to these questions.

Anonymous said...

When you have finished each paragraph or section, RECITE, or tell yourself from memory, what you have read, without looking at the book.

Anonymous said...

And when you have finished the entire assignment, REVIEW by scanning headings and testing your memory of each section.

Anonymous said...

Some claim that this method has helped students retain up to 80 percent of what they read!

Anonymous said...

thanks Sarah, i can try your suggestions
