Joie speaks..
For those in High School, I’m sure some of you are probably worrying about what course to take up in college. There are countless choices around, which makes it harder to find the perfect one. I was definitely like some of you when I was in High School. I had a really tough time figuring it out, but eventually, I was able to discover what I truly wanted to pursue. Deciding on what course to take was a huge step for me since I had to leave my hometown Cebu to take on my dream course. But I have no regrets. I am more than happy here in IMC.
So to you High Schoolers, don’t fret! It’s normal to be uncertain for now, but you have to start charting the right course for you! Here’s an article I found that might help you pick the perfect one.
* From the article “Charting the Right Course” by Gabriella Lee
Thinking about college by now? Or maybe you’re already there and wondering if you’re in the right course. Here’s a guide to making your college and course choices.
Tip#1: EXPLORE YOUR OPTIONS
List down at least four to five colleges or universities you want to apply to. Develop a list of criteria that you want to have in order to make your choice. Consult your parents or guidance counselors and teachers when making this list, and consider the following points:
• Degrees and courses offered
• Scholastic background: is it a reputable school? Does it have a good history of producing top-quality students?
• Finances: is it a public or private school? How much does it cost per unit, and are there any financial assistance programs that you can obtain or apply for?
• Student population: would you like to go to a small campus or a large one? Is it co-ed or and exclusive girls’/boys’ college?
• Campus resources: do they have a library or media center? Are there laboratories well provided for? Does it have regular and easy computer access?
• Extracurricular activities: does it support student organizations and varsities?
Tip#2: WRITE YOUR REASONS
Applying for a college course is both a boon and a vane to every high school student--- on the one hand this is your opportunity to prove yourself in a field of study you’re interested in. Bear in mind that you will have to go through at least four years of this, so make sure that you are fully committed to your reason.
The best strategy is to list down what you like doing, and what you think your best subjects are, and compare them to the qualifications of the course you like. Examine your values as well--- are you more interested in making money than doing charity work? Do you value stability and security, are you good at working under pressure; do you enjoy contributing to society?
Tip#3: GET PAST PEER PRESSURE
Separation anxiety is one of the factors that have to be considered when applying for a college. After all, you’re going to be leaving a place you’ve call home for most of your life--- the school you have grown up in, friends and family that make you feel safe. And it’s important to consider whether or not you can handle the pressure of leaving.
But you also have to remember that it is your choice to apply for a college or course that you think is right for you. Learn how to overcome your fears. Friendships have survived, despite geographical distance and differences and experiences. So don’t be afraid to chart your own path: after all, who knows where you might end up right?
*So High School Juniors and Seniors, do you already have some courses in mind? Any worries or concerns? Share with us your thoughts!
To college students, how’d you end up choosing your course? You might want to give us some advice ☺

In UA&P, we didn't have to choose a course until second year which was good for me because it gave me time to think about what course I wanted. I think it would also help to take a test fom the guidance councilor to see which courses you're more inclined to. Don't let the interviews intimidate you, be confident and if it's really the course you want, go for it! :)
When taking up a course, remember that it should be something that interests you because I have some friends who wanted a different course and they ended up switching in the middle of the year!
I want to take up BUSINESS but there are too many business courses available. Still weighing my options :)
Thank you!!! I'm still in 2nd year but il start thinking about what course to take because i really don't know yet...
When it was time for me to apply for courses in my 2nd year, I suddenly thought of other options aside from IMC. IMC was what i wanted from the start but I realized that I was also interested in Political Economy, Management & a bit of Economics. It made me so confused but I had to decide on which course I was really passionate about.
So I consulted people who knew my strengths and interests like my parents, classmates and teachers. I asked them what they thought was suited for me and surprisingly, all of them said IMC. Even if I was confused at one point, IMC was definitely my perfect course.
In spite of the heavy workload my course demands, everything becomes worth it once you love & enjoy what you do :)
Hey Joie! This is a great post. It will really help those who are in need to find the perfect course for them. I myself had a hard time to choose, but when I discovered the IMC program in UA&P, I realized that it was the course for me. No regrets. :)
Nursing seems to ba trend in my High School. It's not really my interest but i think i will learn to like it in the long run. I will take it up to go abroad and help my family..
PRAYER HELPS :D
Is true! UA&P rocks my world!hehe, kidding aside, choosing a course shouldn't leave one popping a vein or two...BUT one has to be serious enough to choose a good institution to enroll in. A good school should be able to guide you through your life decisions, including courses. =)
hey joie! nice one...know how i did it? i waited for my calling haha good thing ua&p extended my decision time two more years!=p im happy i got into imc..come to think of it, i was aiming for any pre-law related course...when i got to ua&p, i discovered that my interests are different from what i think i wanted =) in the end, its all about what i wanted and not what others say would best suit me-- because i know myself more than anybody! =P
cheers!
To schoolgirl: I suggest you do as much research as you can. Try asking current business students for their recommendations. In UA&P, our Entrepreneurial Management Program is pretty good. You get to put up your own business even before you graduate :)
to anonymous who wants to take up nursing... I hear there are many great opportunities for nursing especially abroad! :) my aunt wants to take up nursing here in the philippines and practice in the u.s. :)
Anonymous 1: You still have a lot of time to think :) Just let us know if you have questions okay? Goodluck :)
Sara: Thanks for sharing, wa :)
Anonymous 2: I heard alot of stories about successful nurses abroad :) They say it really pays off. Good luck :)
Vany: Hey Vany-boo! Thanks for sharing! I know, i'm really thankful for UA&P as well. If I were in another school, who knows what course I will be in? The CAS Program helped me alot in knowing what i wanted to pursue :)
UA&P wasn't really my first choice for college because my older sister was already studying there and I didn't want to follow her footsteps again. But my mom and dad actually weighed the pro's and con's of the different universities with me. I then came to realize that for me, UA&P will offer me the best education possible especially in the field of IT.
I chose Information Technology as my course because ever since I was young, I have always been interested in computers and programming. I invested on something which I knew I was good at. Because of UA&P, I don't only know the technical side of IT, but the business side of it as well. :)
Thanxx ate!
For as long as I can remember, I had always wanted to be a doctor. This early decision made choosing a college really easy. What made it difficult though, was the fact that most of my friends were headed for different courses. Some took up business, others took up Arts, and still others left Cebu for college.
It was pretty scary venturing into college without the support of all my friends, but still I stuck by my dream. I took up a medical course, made a load of new friends (while still keeping in touch with the old ones), and I have no regrets!
ey jason... i think you made the right decision. good that you followed your dreams, anyway, your friends will always be there even if you took a different path..
When i entered college, i also had that feeling. Most of my friends took different courses.. worst, i was the only one studying in my university. in my barkada, there are 2-3 who have the same school. so i was a little bit lonely. but you know what, that made me stronger as a person. my skills were developed better. and now, i'm happy with my school even if i'm not with High school barkada... at least, whenever we meet, there are stories to share...
My advice: take time to THINK about your couse. when i was in college, i applied for a course i wasn't so sure of so i kept switching. don't be like me hehehe
Consult with family, close relatives and friends...they would surely give you tips on which course to take. But most important is have your counselor review your strong points and weak points. That would help you a lot.
Thanks for sharing, Jason :)
Hey guys! Just want to thank you for all your comments :)
Good luck to everyone!
Hi Joie!!!!!!
thanks for helping me. i am thinking of what course to take ty
Hi ate! i think i want imc also
finding the course for you needs a lot of thinking. do as much research as you can and consult your teachers, parents and friends. good luck!
UA&P is the best! the school helps you a lot in choosing courses! I owe so much from my alma matter. now, i'm happy and successful in my job =p
Nice post Joe!
This post reminds me of my high school days :)
i want to be so many things..... doctor, nurse, businesswoman, architect, designer etc. hmmm... so choosing which one is kinda tough for me. but thank you for the tips ;p
i also don't know what course to take up..
i got into UP and i really like my course-BA journalism. but they say it's not practicable coz sometimes it's hard to find a job after college.
then, i also got into UST and the course i applied for was Medical Technology. it's a good pre-med course if you want to proceed to medicine. plus, my relatives want me to be a doctor. i hate to turn them down.
yet, my passion is writing.
i'm really confused.

is it cool studying in uA&P? I heard puro konios daw dun? pano un, simple person lang ako?
to sob, i think you should go to UP and take up Journalism. If it's your passion, then go for it. It's not true that you wont have a good job in the future because of that. Your future is also on the right opportunity and right "diskarte"
I wonder why in your tally, almost everyone wanted to go to UA&P? is this accurate?
hi to JEWLZ! thanks for the post :)
hiii Kenshin
--- i am strong
So who's going to UP? how about ADMU? or DLSU? or UA&P (wink wink)? raise your hands guys
hmm.. should i take up NUrsing (my family's choice), or Management/Communications (my personal choice)
what's your course high school people?
what's your course high school people?
chemical engineering in UP
AMDU: ME. ADMU rocks!
la salle is better than ADMU!
ey, it's not about schools you get in to, but it's about the course that will fit you and will help you excel in your studies and in the future!
i want to be a nurse!
UA&P! the best! Students are really good because of the school curriculum!
i heard IMC and Idustrial economy in UAP are the best among all the universities
great post!
i found the perfect course by praying and by asking God for guidance!
What shall I do with the rest of my life?’ Sooner or later you confront this challenging question. A confusing array of choices present themselves—medicine, business, art, education, computer science, engineering, the trades. And you may feel like the youth who said: “What I consider to be successful . . . is maintaining the comfort level that you grew up with.” Or like others, you may dream of improving your financial lot in life.
Choose something that you are into and also something that is in demand if you want to get employed right away
I chose a course that is not very in demand today, im out of job but im still happy with what i took
it's hard to study in college when you are not really interested with what you are studying
I know someone who after graduating from computer science he studied nursing
shifting course just because you don't like it means wasting money
well i changed my course after first year in college
early planning of what you really want to take up is a wise thing to do
I know someone who swtched courses 3 times he ended up undergraduate
I don't have an idea. I hope he is
Nice post anyways
Often times we people don't get a job that is inline with their course and that is true
i definitely agree with that
My father saw his classmates once in a supermarket, he told me she is a nursing graduate but ended up as a sales lady
Asking parents advice about it would be good
i took my course even i know that it is not that in demand but for sure I took this because I know i could use it in the future
Good advice juliene
choosing course is tough

I wanted to take up landscape architecture or civil engineering but i ended up in Interior design, but i dont regret it
