UA&P I AM S.T.R.O.N.G. : be COLLEGE-ready!

Krystle writes

I understand that most college entrance exam results will be out this month? Well, inspired by that, here’s *something I dug up (well, partially) not really not really to help the HS seniors out there (it would be late for that now, would it?) but the juniors and the lower batches. =p

*from the article, “College Bound” by Zia Morales

Ready for the big league? Here’s a quick guide to getting into your dream university.

STEP 1: CHARTING YOUR COURSE
Some people are lucky enough to know what their calling is at an early age. Most people do not, and panic at the pressure comes high in selecting a college course. If you fall under the latter category, relax! College is all about self discovery so expect several changes in your list of plans during that four-year span.

Unfortunately, college begins with an application process—and all application forms require you to select a specific course for enrollment. If you’re having trouble at this point, a talk with your parents, guidance counselor or homeroom adviser might help clear your head. Your teachers can also give you pressure-free advice. On your own, try to figure out what your skills and interests are. Do you enjoy learning about the inner-markings of the mind? Then Psychology might be for you. Do you have a special skill in selling stuff? Think about Marketing. Base your decision partly on what you’d love to learn about—school is, after all, a place to learn.

Remember, you can always shift to another course. Also, contrary to popular belief, the course you take in college doesn’t seal your future career fate. Think of it as the first step toward a life-long, ever-changing adventure.

STEP 2: CHOOSING YOUR SCHOOL
Are you the biggest Blue Eagles fan on the face of the planet? The prospect of running into Chris Tiu on campus might sound exciting but that shouldn’t be the basis for selecting the university to attend to. There are several schools in and around Manila, not to mention the provinces.

Carefully consider what each school offers in terms of curriculum, extracurricular activities and facilities. Tuition fees, location and academic reputation are also important factors in your decision. University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, University of Asia and the Pacific, De La Salle University and University of Santo Tomas are generally considered the best schools in the country. If this matters to you, then you should aim for these schools.

Pick a school that best fit your needs and wants. Are you a promising athlete? Pick a school that has a strong athletic program. Are you thinking of being a computer professional? Then consider applying to one of the computer colleges. Apply to at least 3 schools to guarantee that you get into at least 1 school of your choice.

STEP 3: APPLY YOURSELF
The application process for each school varies. Once you’ve narrowed down the list of the schools you’re interested in, contact their respective Admissions departments for specific requirements. There are some constants—all schools require completed application forms, high school grades, application fees and photos. You will also have to take (and pass) an entrance exam to gain entry into your school of choice.

STEP 4: PREPARATION IS KEY
What’s next? Since competition is fierce, giving yourself an added advantage over your fellow applicants might just give you the edge you need. If you are nervous about your chances, a tutorial center will help you brush up on your lessons and prepare you for your exams.

If you don’t get into the school of your choice, don’t take it as a stake in the heart of your future. Sometimes, the best things in life are the ones you don’t plan for—the school you do get into might be the right one for you. And if it isn’t—you can always enroll in your dream school as a transfer student. Remember, the path to college need not be straight and narrow. As with life, always be prepared to take some twists and turns along the way.

What do the HS seniors think? Help us help the incoming batches—share your thoughts and experiences. And, goodluck with the upcoming entrance exam results! =)

Oh and to the lower batches, are you ready for college? Let us know what you think! =P

when i was a HS senior, my world was all about getting into the schools i applied for. and why not? if i did not get into any of the schools, i might stop...or i might end up in some school i dont like or know...or ill be the butt of jokes! ---OR SO I THOUGHT. but after everything is over, i realized that college is not about "im-in-a-better-school-than-anyone-in-the-batch" or "its-sad-im-in-an-unknown-school"--college is all about learning and the experiences that come along with it (friends, activities, company, life & classroom lessons)!

dont forget to work hard in high school. first year to third year especially
because those are the grades the college schools will look at. they are going to look at your transcript and your grades will be a big factor if they want you in their school or not.

and, eat chocolates when you study and during the test :)

Up until now, I still haven't decided as to what course I would be taking for college, much more what school to go to and I'm already in my Junior year. 5 months from now would be my final year of High School and so the pressure is really gaining on me to decide what path I'll take. These tips here are very helpful, so kudos to you! I hope that others will be able to find this just as good advice as I did.

And yes, chocolates are good :)

haha yay! finally a junior!=P just to share something, i never really got to decide on what course i should take until my 2nd year in college (well the extra two years was because of the system in ua&p)-- but you get the point =) you still have alot of time to decide, actually...dont worry, your calling will come...what matters is that you end up pursuing something because you like it and that it will be the best way for you to give back to others =p goodluck to you! =)

if you are not sure about the courses you choose when you enter college, you have up to the second year of college to shift to the course you want.
that way you get to be able to see what college is like and once you get the feel of how things go, you might be able to know what you want to be in the future.
you will experience and learn a lot of new things in college. just keep an open mind.

yay thanks vinz! you're my co-giver of advice =P

when i was in high school i didn't understand why i was going to college, i was still stuck between the good life and a great life. i was still living in my fantasy world where i only play around with people and just having fun. so this article or blog is good, i think alot of people (high school students) should read this. And a word of advice to all the Seniors. please choose a course that is inclined with your passion, because you will always make "sisi" if you choose something you don't want. Never expect your parents to choose your happyness.

another tip when in your senior year, have back-up plans. i remember i only applied for 2 colleges. i was scared as hell that i wouldnt get into any of them. lucky enough, i got accepted to both universities. and yes, sol is right. choose a course that would lead you to a career you see yourself in long-term.

anonymous 5:

haha goodluck! dont worry, you will be fine =P

admu results tom? oh god. i remember going through the same "nervous" feeling 3-4 years ago. I really wanted to go to ADMU, but then, unfortunately they didn't take me. But I don't care now, im better off with my current school. WAY BETTER...

Anonymous said...

i'm just so glad i passed uap, dlsu and adsmu...pro it's hard to choose..i want to go sana in uap but then my friends will not go there..i want admu na sana but then again here's my dad na super lasalista..wahh..sure i want to go to dlsu pra la salle all the way dba..pro it's just so hard to decide! should i consider where my friends are going, or where my dad wants me to study or SHOULD I ENTER WHERE I REALLY WANT TO ENETR???....

Anonymous said...

*admu i mean

Anonymous said...

hi enzo! wow. you know what? you enter where you want to enter! haha not where your friends will be. why dont you talk to your dad to seriously consider ateneo? if you think you will be better off with ateneo, then go! reason out. tell him its not about the rivalry-- its about your education.

goodluck in choosing, enzo and congratulations on passing uap ateneo and la salle! =p

to Enzo, tough choice man! but you know what? you should feel lucky because man! you passed UA&P, Adum, and DLSU! it's now down to the decision part! you know what bro? i'd suggest you consult your parents too and listen to what they are going to say, then after that, try to assess yourself (what school do I really want?, what school would best fit my SELF?, and what school would be best to help me reach my chosen career in the future? Try thinking long term! IT WILL REALLY HELP YOU DECIDE. i don't think your dad would get mad at you if you don't actually choose DLSU, since at the end of the day, it is YOU who has the last say.

just an aside, in UA&P, it's all about YOU! :)

Anonymous said...

i hope UA&P will accept me.. this is my third application :(
