UA&P I AM S.T.R.O.N.G: The Balancing Act: Why it is fine to have academic and non-academic at the same time

Sara shares us her story..

I remember back in high school, I did not have much extra-curricular activities after my second year. In my first year, I tried joining the school’s marching band as a brass flutist. I eventually quit when I realized that I’m slow in reading notes. I got disheartened easily. In my second year in high school, I started training to be an officer, so I joined the COCC. Again, after a short while, I quit. From then on, there was no steady hobby or activity that I was in.

My mediocre lifestyle ended when I reached my first year in college. Fate brought me to the two very important and memorable things in my college life. These basically brought so much learning to me. I learned more about life, people, wisdom, and commitment and so much more through these extra-curricular activities. I tried out for the Women’s Futsal Team (indoor soccer) and I auditioned for a school play. From then on, my life in college had more meaning. It had more substance and juice to it. Being a varsity and a stage actress in my school brought out (and still brings) the best out of me. At least that’s what I think.

My academic life, though, is already very demanding. Being in my fourth year in college, the workload of my course has gotten tougher. Most of the people in my batch gave up what they loved doing on the side for the sake of surviving and making better grades this year. As for me, I may be called stubborn for trying to juggle everything that I’m doing. Indeed, it is very risky. I try my best to multi-task and still there are some things that I miss out or sacrifice because of all the activities and work I am engaging myself in. However, this did not and does not stop me.

For the times I miss out on something or someone (like family and friends), I try my best to make up to them. Of course, when it comes to academics, when I have to focus on doing a requirement or extra studying for the lessons to come, I sacrifice training or rehearsals just to fulfill those.

It’s never wrong or irresponsible to engage in extra-curricular activities such as sports or the arts if you know what to set your priorities and manage your time. Do not look down on the other good things that you can do aside from studying. For me, it’s impressive to know someone who is good in both academics and extra-curriculars. Futsal and theater arts have grown part of my life, and they aren’t considered “extras” anymore.

How about you? What are your extra-curricular activities? Do you balance your time well? Let me know your side.

academic + extra-curricular activities = well rounded person

Anonymous said...

nice to know that, jewelz.. you're a well rounded person, indeed. :)

Anonymous said...

i dont have extra curriculars now haha but i used to be in the taekwondo team back in high school...

When I was in high school, i was very much into extra-curricular activities. I was a part of our chorale (believe it or not. haha), and was active in other school organizations. And after class or usually on weekends, I had my ballet lessons. During summer, I also joined all sorts of activities! Dance, tennis, art classes, baking etc. I liked keeping myself busy. Extra-curricular activities allowed me to be passionate about things other than school :)

i'm bad at the balancing act... i used to be in the volleyball varsity but i gave that up because of school work and barkada times hahaha.. i did not regret it but sometimes i wish i did not quit my extra curricular activities... being part of an organization is really fun and rewarding.. :)

Anonymous said...

i believe extra curricular activities are for outstanding students only... i not that smart to engage myself to acting or sports :(

I know people whose grades suffered because of too much extra curriculars. I still think that at some point, we should be willing to give it up to focus on school. Your grades will suffer whether you like it or not

Anonymous said...

when i was i high school i was part of the basketball and volleyball team... and i was also able to become a red belter in kick boxing

Anonymous said...

i think this kind of situations happen only on movies

Anonymous said...

for anonymous:

i believe you only need good time management skills and you'll be able to engage yourself in sports and do well in school

Anonymous said...

Hi everyone! Please watch Sara's play, PYGMALION :)

Anonymous said...

I agree with you Jewelz. Some people CAN handle it, just like Sara :) It's all about time management

i dont have any extra-curicular in my school, though i've lots of organizations outside school. Before i used to have an org in school, but i felt i didn't grew. then i realize that when i join other orgs outside school, i grew a lot in all aspect of my life. then i had more fun with the people that ive been with, compared in my school. maybe because if you have org outside school, you work with different culture and background. Plus you have to work like a professional, unlike in schools where late is most of the time being tolerated and no seriousness in works.

My org (outside school) really taught me a lot. The people are very different, the ages vary from teens to adults, you get to learn a lot from their experiences... our works has to be dynamic..

And the training and discipline that i got from them, i apply them in school, which makes my instructors see that i'm a discipline and responsible person.

Sara! Nice topic!

Well, i really admire you coz youre able to do the things you like despite being in IMC.

When I was in elementary and highschool, I was kinda active too, I had piano lessons for almost 8 years (ever since grade 2!) and violin lessons for about 3 years, then swimming lessons and camps during summer (underwater hockey!), tapos CAT during highschool. In college, I became part of the Track and Field team and Dulaang Roc for 2 years...

But when I entered IMC, my life became chaotic! Wala na akong extra-curricular activities :c I would spend my weekends reading and doing homeworks. Nakakainis! Kaya after IMC, i plan to do other things pa.. like learn a new language and bake and travel and so much more. Hahaha.

Go Pygmalion!

See you in class mwah! :)

Anonymous said...

Hi guys! thanks for giving your comments! It's nice to know that a lot of people are well-rounded. And for those who don't have activities on the side, it's never too late. Also, don't put yourself down by thinking you can't.

I respect the people who put academics first and who engage in only academics. :) That's a good thing, but consider taking on some stuff that will build your character. :)

Good job!

As promised, here's my comment and I'll make it serious. :p Kahit medyo late, here it is..

I'm really glad she joined the Futsal Team cos that's where we got to know each other better. :) Right? Or not? Hahaha. :) See, you really get to meet a lot of people in your extra curriculars. :)

We were also "blockmates" for one semester in CAS. I should've gone with her to IMC so she can still help me review for exams. Galing nya kasi magturo eh. :p Smart girl kasi talaga. :)

And yeah, you should watch her play. She's really great! Akala mo walang ibang ginawa sa buhay kundi magrehearse. But no! She's just really good at what she does. :) At everything she does. :)

I wish I could juggle eveything like she does. I've been playing sports since Grade 5 up until now pero struggle yung studies ko eh. For that, bow ako sayo! :)

Love you, Bee! Mwah!

Anonymous said...

hi guys! thanks for your comments! :) anyway, keep it cool in here, okay? no fighting... :)
