Sara shares us her story..
I remember back in high school, I did not have much extra-curricular activities after my second year. In my first year, I tried joining the school’s marching band as a brass flutist. I eventually quit when I realized that I’m slow in reading notes. I got disheartened easily. In my second year in high school, I started training to be an officer, so I joined the COCC. Again, after a short while, I quit. From then on, there was no steady hobby or activity that I was in.
My mediocre lifestyle ended when I reached my first year in college. Fate brought me to the two very important and memorable things in my college life. These basically brought so much learning to me. I learned more about life, people, wisdom, and commitment and so much more through these extra-curricular activities. I tried out for the Women’s Futsal Team (indoor soccer) and I auditioned for a school play. From then on, my life in college had more meaning. It had more substance and juice to it. Being a varsity and a stage actress in my school brought out (and still brings) the best out of me. At least that’s what I think.
My academic life, though, is already very demanding. Being in my fourth year in college, the workload of my course has gotten tougher. Most of the people in my batch gave up what they loved doing on the side for the sake of surviving and making better grades this year. As for me, I may be called stubborn for trying to juggle everything that I’m doing. Indeed, it is very risky. I try my best to multi-task and still there are some things that I miss out or sacrifice because of all the activities and work I am engaging myself in. However, this did not and does not stop me.
For the times I miss out on something or someone (like family and friends), I try my best to make up to them. Of course, when it comes to academics, when I have to focus on doing a requirement or extra studying for the lessons to come, I sacrifice training or rehearsals just to fulfill those.
It’s never wrong or irresponsible to engage in extra-curricular activities such as sports or the arts if you know what to set your priorities and manage your time. Do not look down on the other good things that you can do aside from studying. For me, it’s impressive to know someone who is good in both academics and extra-curriculars. Futsal and theater arts have grown part of my life, and they aren’t considered “extras” anymore.
How about you? What are your extra-curricular activities? Do you balance your time well? Let me know your side.

academic + extra-curricular activities = well rounded person
nice to know that, jewelz.. you're a well rounded person, indeed. :)
i dont have extra curriculars now haha but i used to be in the taekwondo team back in high school...
When I was in high school, i was very much into extra-curricular activities. I was a part of our chorale (believe it or not. haha), and was active in other school organizations. And after class or usually on weekends, I had my ballet lessons. During summer, I also joined all sorts of activities! Dance, tennis, art classes, baking etc. I liked keeping myself busy. Extra-curricular activities allowed me to be passionate about things other than school :)
"It’s never wrong or irresponsible to engage in extra-curricular activities such as sports or the arts if you know what to set your priorities and manage your time."
very well said. :)
i'm bad at the balancing act... i used to be in the volleyball varsity but i gave that up because of school work and barkada times hahaha.. i did not regret it but sometimes i wish i did not quit my extra curricular activities... being part of an organization is really fun and rewarding.. :)
i believe extra curricular activities are for outstanding students only... i not that smart to engage myself to acting or sports :(

I know people whose grades suffered because of too much extra curriculars. I still think that at some point, we should be willing to give it up to focus on school. Your grades will suffer whether you like it or not
when i was i high school i was part of the basketball and volleyball team... and i was also able to become a red belter in kick boxing
i think this kind of situations happen only on movies
for anonymous:
i believe you only need good time management skills and you'll be able to engage yourself in sports and do well in school
Hi everyone! Please watch Sara's play, PYGMALION :)
I agree with you Jewelz. Some people CAN handle it, just like Sara :) It's all about time management
i dont have any extra-curicular in my school, though i've lots of organizations outside school. Before i used to have an org in school, but i felt i didn't grew. then i realize that when i join other orgs outside school, i grew a lot in all aspect of my life. then i had more fun with the people that ive been with, compared in my school. maybe because if you have org outside school, you work with different culture and background. Plus you have to work like a professional, unlike in schools where late is most of the time being tolerated and no seriousness in works.
My org (outside school) really taught me a lot. The people are very different, the ages vary from teens to adults, you get to learn a lot from their experiences... our works has to be dynamic..
And the training and discipline that i got from them, i apply them in school, which makes my instructors see that i'm a discipline and responsible person.
great comment! i love to read more of your opinions.
thanks for sharing that, Joie! You're really talented and smart. And thanks for sharing about my play.. :) hehe.
I admire people who are able to balance both well :)
thank you for sharing!
I heard a good student say; "I could never make it good in academics if I don't have sports!"
True enough, she is good in both...
Seems like its Jewelz.
From: Someone who knows Jewelz so well.
I'm in our basketball varsity. It's been good for me
I still don't have activities but i will join some next sem :)
Extra-curricular activities keep us away from vices! It helps us enhance our skills and we are able to use our extra time wisely!
Thanks for sharing us your story!
Im doing bad academically so i don't think i should engage in extra-curriculars as of now...
Be a well-rounded person! :)
Extra-curricular activities are fun :)
I'm active in orgs. it makes me enhance my skills in leadership
Be a go-getter! Grab every oppotunity that comes your way :)
I'll watch Pygmalion soon! Good luck Sara!
I envy you for being able to balance both!
I'm a part of our school choir and i'm in our studentc council!
My parents always encouraged me to be active in extra-curricular activities for me to be a well-rounded person :)
I had to give up other activities because of my workload in school :(
Thanks for sharing sara!
I do better in school if i engage myself in other activities :)
I only join activities i know i can handle. I won't let it affect my studies..
Extra-curriculars help us make the most out of the time we have :)
That's good. Just make sure it will not affect your studies. It's still your first priority
God told us to use our talents, and share it to people around us :)

My parents think extra-curricular activities is a waste of time! :(
I want to be part of a varsity team!
I'm a theatre actress too :)

its all about passion!
This is good but studies must come first!
very inspirational!
be well-rounded!
im a pianist!

nice :)
Sara! Nice topic!
Well, i really admire you coz youre able to do the things you like despite being in IMC.
When I was in elementary and highschool, I was kinda active too, I had piano lessons for almost 8 years (ever since grade 2!) and violin lessons for about 3 years, then swimming lessons and camps during summer (underwater hockey!), tapos CAT during highschool. In college, I became part of the Track and Field team and Dulaang Roc for 2 years...
But when I entered IMC, my life became chaotic! Wala na akong extra-curricular activities :c I would spend my weekends reading and doing homeworks. Nakakainis! Kaya after IMC, i plan to do other things pa.. like learn a new language and bake and travel and so much more. Hahaha.
Go Pygmalion!
See you in class mwah! :)
Hi guys! thanks for giving your comments! It's nice to know that a lot of people are well-rounded. And for those who don't have activities on the side, it's never too late. Also, don't put yourself down by thinking you can't.
I respect the people who put academics first and who engage in only academics. :) That's a good thing, but consider taking on some stuff that will build your character. :)
Good job!
hi farwell perry! thanks for the comment.. :)
hi anonymous,
there are no lonely boys... hahah. i prefer to say nothing about it.. hehe. :)
do we know each other? i think we do. ahah.
thanks for the comment.

I'm really glad she joined the Futsal Team cos that's where we got to know each other better. :) Right? Or not? Hahaha. :) See, you really get to meet a lot of people in your extra curriculars. :)
We were also "blockmates" for one semester in CAS. I should've gone with her to IMC so she can still help me review for exams. Galing nya kasi magturo eh. :p Smart girl kasi talaga. :)
And yeah, you should watch her play. She's really great! Akala mo walang ibang ginawa sa buhay kundi magrehearse. But no! She's just really good at what she does. :) At everything she does. :)
I wish I could juggle eveything like she does. I've been playing sports since Grade 5 up until now pero struggle yung studies ko eh. For that, bow ako sayo! :)
Love you, Bee! Mwah!
hi guys! thanks for your comments! :) anyway, keep it cool in here, okay? no fighting... :)
hey peach strawberry!
wow, that's good to know! keep it up.. :) hope to catch one your performances in the future. :)
i used to have extra curricular activities and i believe every students need that, balance is healthy
Jewelz is right, time managament lang yan and of course self- discipline. Without it, ay... patay tayo
i used to be in a volleyball team
Ako I used to join the dancers in school, i love dancing.
kahit nag rereview ako, i dance, well it helps hehehe
My husbandextra curricular activity nya afer school? Nag alaga ng carabao nila, heheehhe
Enjoy ba sya?
deutoNot really he has to follow orders from his father lang
Does he do that right after school?
but when he feels mad he would hit the carabao so hard, and it made him feel good
In my own observation, most of the students that are able to have enjoy extra curricular are those not obliged to do so much work at home
I agree with you anonymous.
Yung mga less fortunate na bata minsan kahit gusto nila mag join sa ibang activities circumstances don't allow them
Support from parents is important
sa province kailangan go home right after school kasi mag aalaga pa ng younger siblings
sa province kailangan go home right after school kasi mag aalaga pa ng younger siblings
or they need to collect wood parang panggatong sa ag cook ng food
or they need to help sa pag hanap ng food
poor kids...
yeah but meron talagang advantages at disadvantagesyung ganun
Like my husband. I used to work at an early age while studying
I mean he used to work at an early age
Advantage?
He can work, I mean he can survive even if a great tribulation comes, he will not get hungry
Disadvantage?
He can't even play basketball, wala syang sports
And sobrang shy sya
Kaya for those of you that are fortunate enough to join different activities appreciate it, not all have the opportunity
Now i enjoy making handmade papers
hello jewelz
to be balance means to be responsible and yet enjoys life to the fullest
maximize your time
just enjoy and win
academic + family and friends

dance
do judo or pilates
put up a business
violin lessons

read and play
dont be a neirdy
